Huckleberry finn

Chapters 1-5

1) This book takes place during the 1830's to 40's we know this because the the civil war hadn't happened yet, Huck also mentions how the book takes place in the 1800's.

2)  The story is told in Huck Finns perspective and this sometimes messes up the story most likely because sometimes you only see his perspectives and opinions.

Chapters 5-11

1) Pap has Huck locked up because he keeps trying to run away from pap. the reasons being Huck gets beat on the regular and is not happy at all.

2) Huck escapes by sawing a hole in the wall of the cabin and grabbing all the food and anything else necessary to survive away from pap, he puts everything inside of a canoe, then he  kills a pig, spreads blood all over the cabin and puts a hole in the door with the axe.

3) Abolitionist in this story and at this point in time means to break the habits he had been used to and the routine of every day he had been living in Huck is concerned because he doesn't want people to see him as a bad person even though he was doing what was right even though he went a little over board.

Chapters 12-16

1) Both women say that the child is theirs so king Solomon makes a choice to split the child in half so that both women can get a half of the child. Jim and Huck talk about how if Solomon had that many wives he would have to listen to them all gab about how their day was.

2) Jim was really upset that Huck would pull a prank like that and talked about how he couldn't live without him. this tells us Jim is very reliant on on Huck.

3) I believe he believed in religion back then so much because back then religion was a lot bigger of a deal and was lot more important back then and seemed to be something people could rely on a lot more then people can today.

4) This quote from the book tells a lot about how Huck views people of color and how he thinks of them as slaves and not people but he sees Jim as a person and not a slave, this is because he has actually gotten to know Jim as person and not a slave.

5) Huck has decided to further help Jim because he wants him top escape but since the men were looking for Jim instead of telling them where Jim was he told them his family had small pox and the men gave him 45$ for treatment and gave him directions to seek treatment. Huck had decided to live with his guilt and help out Jim and help Jim get to the free states .

Chapters 17-21

1) The family is quite rich and has a lot of money the had Huck come live with them because of story Huck told them. There was another family they always fight with called the Shepardson's. In one family a girl and a boy in the other ended up falling in  love even though the family's hate each other, it was basically forbidden love.

2) He used these to family's to cause a sense of a huge dramatized scene which today doesn't seem like that big of a deal but, Twain never even explained why the two family's were fighting and that's what made this such a huge deal.

3) Huck tries to live in the present and not to focus on the next day, he has hundreds and hundreds of problems a boy his age should not be having especially back then.

4) Huck goes along with their lies that they are both royalty because he likes to hear the story's they always tell and the things they make up that entertain him. However Jim does not know they are lying and treats them as if they are actually royalty.

5) I do not think their plan will work because if they carry Jim in the will not get the earned prize money and will just be the people helping the African American child.

Chapters 22-26

1)

At the very end of chapter 22 we see the handbill that the king and the duke will pass out. The duke says “if that line don’t fetch them, I don’t know Arkansas!”

Why would the line at  the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play?

At this time Arkansas has been tarring and feathering women and children. This is because they do not have any respect for them. By not inviting them to the circus more men would come.

 2) Towards the end of chapter 23 we see this line: “What was the use to tell Jim these warn’t real kings and dukes? It wouldn’t a done no good; and besides, it was just as I said; you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.”
a.Why doesn’t Huck see the use in telling Jim?

Huck doesn't want to tell Jim about it is that they had talked about it already. Jim trusted them and thought they weren't con-men. The talk between the two would have gone nowhere and could have ended in some sort of feud. Also, Huck didn't want Jim to feel gullible or stupid, much like the one time when he had lied about the dream. It was just a win win situation for everybody.

        b. When Huck Finn says this, he means that the reason they couldn't tell them from the real kind is because they had never met or even seen a duke or king in person. They would have no idea what they act like, look like, or talk like. Also, The King and The Duke were very good at tricking people and Huck and Jim weren't very educated. Huck meant that they could be categorized as gullible people.

3)  While they were in town, the King had been told that a man had passed away. He was rich and they were waiting for hit two brothers to show up because everything in his will was left to them. One brother was deaf. The next day the King and the Duke impersonated the two brothers. The Duke acted as the deaf one. They showed up pretending that they were his brothers and they cried and put on a whole act. They walked up the mountain to the home of the deceased with town folks allowing them to cry on their shoulders. Huck is so ashamed because he can't believe they would actually do this. It was horrible. Also, his real brothers were out there somewhere. This tells us that Huck does not support what they are doing and he is a very sympathetic person and cares about people around him.
4) One of the main things that the doctor noticed showing that they were a fraud was their British accents. The doctor said that they were some of the worst he had ever heard and that you could tell they were fake. He also mentioned how one day they would think of what they just did and get sick, the same feeling Huck has been experiencing the whole time. The King and The Duke knew nothing about Mr. Wilks and who he was as a person. If they were truly brothers they would have had more knowledge.
5)the King convinces the Duke to stay through the whole night until they steal all of the other properties. The Duke wanted to play it safe but the King wanted everything. He is very greedy and wants everything he can possibly get. They stayed in order to acquire all of the family's properties.

Chapters 27-30

1.Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period? (Chapter 27)

It was a custom, during that time,  to stay with the dead until they were buried. This was called a wake.

2.What do we learn (or reaffirm) about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks? (Chapter 28)

That the king is a horrible person and doing horrible things. Jane after being told the whole situation calls the king a brute. We learn that Huck is a very emotional kind of person and cares a lot about others well being, this is why he told Jane while she was packing and about to leave, because she was completely freaking out about the whole situation.

3.What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? (Chapter 29)

The first method was to compare the two parties handwriting. The King, the Duke, and the two brothers were called into a meeting with a lawyer. The lawyer had all four men sign a paper so the handwriting could be compared. The second method they used was to check for a tattoo.  Harvey (the real brother) brings up that his brother had a tattoo on his chest which then brings up following questions about the tattoo, which was then confirmed by the undertaker that the other man was fake.

Chapters 31-35

1.) Jim had been captured due to reward flyers, and would now be returning to slavery. He wanted to write to Miss Watson and tell her where Jim was, however that would prove that Huck was an accomplice to a slave's escape. He began to pray that Jim would find Miss Watson, but he was praying for something that he didn't completely want to happen, and that meaning he was 'praying for a lie.'

2.) Huck was originally going to write a letter to Tom Sawyer, so Tom could tell Miss Watson about the details on Jim. But, no matter who Huck wrote to or what he said, both Jim and Huck would end up losing either way. If Huck did do this the whole entire story would get out to the public that is why he decides to tear up the letter.

3.) This whole situation doesn't make any sense because if Tom Sawyer is a slave stealer, then that would make Huck the exact same way, he's been with Jim, the whole time. Huck is being very Hypocritical.

4.) For both statements he was obviously talking about slavery and wondering why any human being could do this to another human being, then he realizes that this is the way everyone is being brought up and just learning from people around them so it's implanted into their conscience.

5.) They are looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free because they don't want Huck to get in trouble for helping a slave escape enslavement.

Chapters 36-40

1.)

  1. In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom’s motivation? What is Huck’s motivation? (Why are they doing it?)

Tom's motivation is basically the thrill of the whole experience. He wants to go back to his gang and tell this huge story to all the people in his gang. Huck is doing the dead for Jim and he's doing it because he actually cares about him, and wants to see him living a better life.

  1. What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they “let on” about something? Why do they do this? (Begins on chapter) When Huck, Finn, and Tom say, "Let on," in the book they mean more of, "Let's pretend or make this up". Its basically just a slang for something people in the south would say. It's also something they would say to give them kind of hope. For example; "Let on, that we make it out of here alive".

  2. Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle’s slave? What are his motivations for this? (Chapter 39)

  3. Uncle Silas tells us that Jim had ran away, Aunt Sally is freaking out because the house is out of control and everything is completely upside down. Uncle Silas plans advertise for Jim as a captured runaway slave. Later in the story Tom starts writing letters to that particular family with the name of "Unknown friend". These letters are just to distract them from panicking about Jim running away.

  4. We’ve worked a great deal on this novel’s satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim’s escape by Tom and Huck satire? It's Satire because in real life their plan would never work. It is sheer luck that they have made it this far.

  5. Towards the end of the chapter Huck says, “I knowed he was white inside,” about Jim. Why does he say this and what does he mean? He says this because back then being sane was like being white or not a slave and he's calling Jim a regular person basically.

    1. Chapter 41-END

    2. Towards the end of chapter 41: “And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn’t look her in the face”. Why does Huck feel this way? He felt like he was using her and taking advantage of how nice she was, she was treating him like a mother and treating him like he was an actual person. Huck was not in pain but in comfort.
    3. In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?  Huck then needs help getting the bullet out of his leg, when the doctor says he can not help Jim crawls out and says he can help. At first the doctor thought that Jim was a run away slave while it turned out he just wanted to help. From this we learned that Jim was just a sweat heart and wants to help other people.
    4. What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)? We learn that Tom is more adventurous than we thought. When he awakens he says that Mrs. Watson has died and in her will she said that Jim is a free slave. We learned that Tom just went along for the thrill and that he will go on any adventure as long as he can tell the story after. Tom is a adrenaline junky.
    5. You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck. Huck was a very kind generous person and wanted to help everyone he can. He wanted to be there throughout the book for Jim even when he knew he shouldn't of been. He was all around a good person. He made me rethink who I am and makes me want to become a better person.
